Equity Fun Day: A Celebration of Chess and Joy

Whether it was meticulously planned or just a happy coincidence, Equity recently hosted a lively chess fun day for unrated players to come together, enjoy themselves, and immerse themselves in the timeless game. This event took place shortly after Equity took the lead in the National Chess Premier League. Regardless of the timing, one thing is certain: every so often, chess enthusiasts need a break from the competitive grind to savor the pure beauty and joy that chess offers.

Every chess player understands the demands of competitive play — the countless hours spent on complex puzzles, some of which require extensive analysis, and the late nights spent studying endgame strategies authored by Grandmasters. Yet, despite these challenges, our love for the game remains unwavering, as evidenced by this delightful tournament.

The event was structured as a Swiss system tournament, featuring a field of enthusiastic unrated players. The atmosphere was lively, with the occasional illegal move and more dubious moves than one could count, but the spirit of fun remained unbroken. Before long, the five rounds were completed, and a winner emerged: Paul Waweru, who scored a perfect 5 points. Dennis Wanjiku claimed the runner-up position with 4 points, while Henry Muchiri took third place.

Overall, it was a wonderful day filled with young talents, and perhaps even a few future Grandmasters in the making
